How to Inspect Robot Chassis Fasteners After a Build Session

Create a safe post-session inspection for visible loosening, movement and damage without inventing torque values or hardware compatibility.

Record the exact build state

Note the robot configuration, parts changed and tests completed during the session. Use the actual component instructions and build record.

Do not assume visually similar screws, inserts or brackets share a specification.

Make the robot safe to handle

Follow the approved shutdown and power-isolation procedure, place the robot on a stable support and allow relevant parts to cool.

Keep hands away from pinch points and stored-energy mechanisms. Ask a competent supervisor when the safe state is unclear.

Inspect in a consistent order

Work around the chassis methodically, noting missing hardware, visible gaps, shifted brackets, cracks, rubbing or witness marks.

Compare with the documented starting condition rather than relying on memory.

Check only by the specified method

Use the tool, sequence and tightening information for the exact hardware. Generic torque advice or repeated overtightening can damage threads and structures.

Replace suspect hardware only with verified suitable parts; do not improvise compatibility.

Investigate repeated movement

If the same joint moves again, stop and review alignment, vibration, loading, retention method and component condition with the responsible supervisor or maker guidance.

Do not hide a recurring problem by simply tightening it before each test.

Update the build record

Record observations, action taken, parts replaced and whether further testing is authorised. Photograph relevant areas where useful.

Frequently asked questions

Should every screw be tightened after every session? Follow the exact build instructions. Can appearance prove a joint is secure? No. Should repeated loosening pause testing? Yes, until reviewed.
