How to Inspect Robot Connectors Before a Powered Test

Inspect robot connectors for identity, seating, strain and visible damage before an authorised powered test without assuming electrical compatibility.

Work from the documented connection plan

Use the current wiring diagram, component references and manufacturer information for the exact build. Similar-looking connectors may have different pin arrangements or purposes.

Do not infer compatibility from physical fit alone. A connection should be reviewed by a competent supervisor before power is applied.

Isolate power before handling connections

Follow the approved isolation procedure and confirm the responsible person has made the system safe to inspect. Keep batteries and other energy sources managed according to their instructions.

Do not connect, disconnect or reseat parts on an energised robot unless an authorised procedure specifically requires it and suitable competent supervision is present.

Check identity and orientation

Match both ends to the documented labels and confirm orientation without forcing the housing. Look for keyed features, pin references and polarity information in the correct documentation.

If a label or diagram is unclear, stop and resolve it. Trial insertion or trial power is not an appropriate way to discover the connection.

Inspect seating, strain and visible condition

Check that housings are fully seated as intended and that wires are not carrying the mechanical load. Look for loose contacts, bent parts, damaged insulation, contamination or heat discolouration.

Do not repair an unfamiliar connector by improvisation. Replace or rectify it using the appropriate part, tools and authorised method.

Review clearance through movement

With power isolated, check the planned movement of joints, wheels or covers against the cable and connector location. Confirm that the connection cannot be pinched, pulled or struck.

Keep hands clear during powered movement. Mechanical clearance observed by hand is only one check and does not prove the connection is electrically correct.

Record the check before controlled testing

Note the build version, connections reviewed, unresolved points and approving supervisor. Begin powered testing only in the defined test area under the authorised plan.

Frequently asked questions

Does a connector fitting prove compatibility? No. Should I reseat it while powered? Follow the approved isolation procedure. What if a pin looks damaged? Stop and obtain competent review.
