How to Record Robot Battery Identity and Status Before Use

Create a practical battery identity and status record for a robot build without guessing chemistry, compatibility, charging settings or remaining service life.

Give every battery a unique reference

Use a durable identifier that connects the physical battery to its purchase record, manufacturer information and project log. Do not cover safety labels or vents.

If a label is damaged or unreadable, isolate the item from normal use and ask a competent person to identify the safe next step.

Copy specifications from reliable evidence

Record the manufacturer, model, stated chemistry, nominal voltage, capacity, connector and any batch or date code exactly as shown in reliable documentation.

Do not infer chemistry, charging settings or compatibility from connector shape, colour or another battery that looks similar.

Record which robot configuration was approved

Link the battery to the exact robot, controller, power system and manufacturer guidance under which it has been checked. Note who approved the configuration and when.

A marketplace listing or community post does not by itself prove electrical, mechanical or thermal compatibility.

Log condition before and after sessions

Under suitable supervision, record visible damage, swelling, leakage, unusual heat, connector condition and the session outcome. Stop using an item that raises a safety concern.

Do not puncture, open, modify or experimentally charge a suspect battery. Follow the manufacturer’s safety instructions and local disposal requirements.

Separate storage status from performance claims

Record whether the battery is available, in use, quarantined or retired, together with its storage location and the date of the last review.

Voltage readings or runtime observations alone cannot prove remaining capacity, internal condition or future safety.

Use the record during troubleshooting

When a robot behaves unexpectedly, note the exact battery reference and configuration rather than swapping unlabelled packs at random. This makes comparisons more meaningful.

Keep power isolated before physical inspection and involve a competent adult or qualified technician where the learner, school or build requires it.

Frequently asked questions

Can connector shape prove compatibility? No. Should a swollen or damaged battery stay in normal use? No. Must charging follow the exact manufacturer guidance? Yes.
